Three Signs That You Need To Let It Go (and the culprit behind why you haven’t already)
We all understand that sometimes we have clothes in our closets that aren’t getting worn.
But you know what’s not? The WHY behind it. And guess what? Your girl Mel is about to crack this case wide open.
Chances are, you haven’t gotten rid of it because it USED to be your favorite.
Yes…. USED TO is the important part of that sentence. How many pieces do you have in your closet that you used to wear all.the.time but somewhere along the line you stopped? Our brain plays tricks on us sometimes and we don’t always realize we stopped wearing it until it’s been sitting there collecting dust for awhile.
Here are a few red flags to make you realize it’s time to let it go. Let it go like Elsa in Frozen (ugh such a mom thing to say but I couldn’t stop myself) …
It used to be a different color. If you bought white sneakers and they are currently a weird shade of gray, ya gotta say goodbye. And I don’t care if you plan to wash them. Chances are you won’t and they will sit there as a reminder of something else you have to do. #realtalk
It is misshapen, has holes, or pills. One of the questions I have my style blazers ask themselves when they clean out their closets is “Would I buy this in a store now.” Ummm I’m gonna go with no if it’s got a bunch of rips and tears in it (unless it’s intentionally distressed). You feel me? We are trying to elevate your look and make you feel put together, not say “Well I used to really like this.”
If you don’t feel like it represents your style. As much as some pieces are timeless, other pieces are 100 percent NOT. Trends change, styles change, and lifestyles change. This can lead to pieces being in your closet that just don’t feel like you anymore.
It’s crazy how one day a piece of clothing can bring you SO much joy and then a few years (or sometimes months) later you can’t bring yourself to wear it. If this is something that really bothers you, I want you to think about how you got here in the first place. Ya know? How can you have more timeless pieces that stand the test of time?
Maybe that means you splurge on higher quality pieces.
Maybe it means you need to be more intentional before you purchase something.
Maybe it means you focus on quality over quantity and spend less time in fast fashion stores.
Take some time to think this through today. While this happens to all of us at one point or another, identifying WHY you aren’t wearing something anymore can be therapeutic and beneficial for having a confident closet. And you KNOW that’s what I’m all about.
