Why IS That Never Worn?

We all have at least one. You know what I’m talking about. The ONE. The piece of clothing that you pass over EVERY SINGLE TIME yet you somehow can’t get rid of it. You know you SHOULD like it. Every time you ask yourself if you should donate it, something convinces you to keep it. You will wear it. You like it. You just AREN’T WEARING IT.

Why aren’t you are wearing it?

Well… guess what? There are actual reasons and if you can get to the bottom of it you can either figure out why you aren’t wearing it so you can start to add it into your rotation or you can finally let go and donate it. So.. are you ready to crack the code?! Let’s do it.

There are 3 main culprits to why you are holding on to something you are passing over on the reg. They are…

  1. Someone else bought it for you. That’s right. Maybe they have good taste. Maybe they did a pretty good job picking something out that you would like. But no matter what the scenario is, something is just off. One thing that happens often in this situation is that the fit is off. So frequently someone buys us something and the style is pretty good. That’s not always the issue. The FIT, that is the hard part for someone else to guess. So we hold onto it assuming that we will wear it but it just never gets picked. Especially if you’ve been following me for a long time, then you know how I teach to implement confidence checks. If you are doing a daily confidence check I can almost guarantee that the ill fitting dress is never chosen. This is not a bad thing, but it IS time to let it go, or get it altered.

  2. It cost money. Yep, I’m going there. There are those times when you spent money on something (or see above someone gifted you something) and it just doesn’t work out the way you thought it would. So you keep thinking “I spent money on this! I’m not going to donate it!” Unfortunately, I have bad news for ya. If you aren’t going to wear it, it doesn’t matter if you spend money on it. It’s still just taking up space. This would be a good time to give it to someone you love who you think WILL wear it or try to sell it online or to consignment.

  3.  You don’t know how to wear it. This is a very common situation, and one that is the easiest to remedy. If you bought a piece that you like, but you can’t figure out how to wear it, chances are you need to do one thing. You need to play around in your closet. Take some time, (let’s say 30 min TOPS) and try and create outfits with this piece that stumps you. Chances are you’ve never allotted for this time and doing so would be a game changer. If you don’t know where to start head to Pinterest or your favorite fashion influencer to get inspired!

Ok… so which one is it? Is it time to let it go, get it altered, or find new ways to wear it! I know that you can totally make that shift, and if you need any help you KNOW your girl Mel is here just for that reason!
