The Effect Your Lifestyle Has On Your Closet
Ahhh… college. That time of life where you aren’t quite an adult but you certainly aren’t a child. The time when you think you have all the answers figured out and what you think you know will turn out to be quite untrue anyway. I remember college being a major time of reinvention for me. I was no longer the person I was in high school and found freedom in deciding who this new version of myself was going to be.
So there I was, a spritely 19 year old getting ready to go to my first college party. I didn’t really know what to wear. I mean.. What do you wear to a party with people you don’t know in a place you’ve never been? But I knew I wanted to make an impression (as ya do in your first semester of college) and I also knew that this was a chance for me to express myself. See even back then I understood the importance of a first impression and knew that I wanted to say SOMETHING.
But here’s the kicker. What I wanted to say back then is certainly different than what this wife, stylist, and mom of two is trying to say to the world. So my clothes obviously need to shift. I’m no longer 19, it’s not 2001, my body is different, trends are different, and what I do during my day is also QUITE different.
I can’t tell you how often we have a hard time letting go of clothes because we don’t realize our lifestyle has shifted. As much as I enjoyed rocking a pair of high heels I have much less use for them now, therefore there are fewer in my closet. This is a NATURAL progression but it does take a bit of intention to make sure your closet represents you.
This is important to note. Not only should your clothes work for your lifestyle NOW but if you are holding on to a lot of older items due to a previous lifestyle you are filling your closet with clothes (and shoes) that you don’t wear.
This can be detrimental for two reasons.
1) You are constantly being reminded of a lifestyle that you used to have, and sometimes you may miss it. WHO NEEDS THAT?! No matter what your circumstances are, you don’t need an old version of yourself staring you in the face every time you go to get dressed! Reminding you of questionable choices, ex boyfriends, and blisters of yesteryear. Ok, I’m just joking about that last part… but I feel like my point is clear!
2) When your closet is filled with items you don’t wear (no matter what the reason) you can’t find or focus on the clothes you DO love. My goal is ALWAYS to fill your closet with clothes you love. All of them!
Take a minute and think about your current lifestyle. Do your clothes in your closet represent your current day to day life? I call this aligning your closet with your life and it’s a surefire way to going from misalignment to feeling truly represented.
Starting next week I’ll be sharing a new free training that is sure to help you align your closet with your lifestyle and so much more. I’m currently pouring my heart and soul into this for you and I’m getting SO excited to share! Stay tuned next week for instant access and for all the deets!
